Hadley’s Tea is the premier tea shop in Albuquerque. We offer everything you need to heighten your tea experience from a wide selection of fine teas to unique gifts to etiquette tips to host a proper tea party.
Setting Up for Your Tea Party
Hosting a successful tea party requires the right settings, which include:
- For each guest:
- A tea cup—the handle of which should be pointed to the 4:00 position
- A saucer (if serving hot tea)
- Spoon(s) (if serving iced tea, the iced tea spoon is set to the outer right of other flatware)
- A tea caddy
- Tea serve ware—ideally, a tea kettle with tea cozy
Other items you will need depend on what you plan to offer to accompany your tea. You may need plates and flatware for scones, cookies or biscuits as well as dishes and serving spoons for any toppings (like cream or jam). You will also need tea “complements” such as sugar, honey, lemons (which should always be thinly sliced), etc.
Tea Tasting Etiquette
Proper tea party etiquette calls for a certain order to things. For instance:
- If you have a scone with your tea, spread the scone first with jam then with cream
- If you desire milk in your tea, it is poured in after the tea
- Lemon is always added last and is never removed once added
Tea party etiquette also dictates a number of do’s and don’ts, such as:
|Tea Etiquette Do’s||Tea Etiquette Don’ts|
|★ Sample each dish offered at the tea party
★ Stir your tea without making any noise with the flatware
★ Place a used tea bag on a tea caddy
|☆ Place any extra items on the table, even glasses
☆ Jiggle a tea bag by the string when steeping (this demonstrates impatience)
☆ Drain a tea bag by winding the string around the spoon
☆ Put a used tea bag on the cup saucer
☆ Place used spoons on the table
☆ Place a teaspoon on the saucer in front of the cup
☆ Swirl tea in the cup as you do wine in a glass
☆ Press a lemon against the side of the cup with the spoon
☆ Sip your tea with your pinkie finger extended
Of course, the key to any successful tea party is to serve delicious tea. Hadley’s Tea has a wide variety of classic flavors and unique blends that are certain to be a hit, even if proper etiquette is not always observed.
